Related to Slaves?

Most of us are familiar with Christmas songs, at least for the first verse. Then we get in trouble. I tried to pay attention more carefully this year to all the verses to understand the complete thought of the original writer’s intent. While singing “O, Holy Night” at church, I really became choked up when we sang the third verse.

Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His Gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His Name all oppression shall cease.

It is easy to get the idea to love one another. God in his wisdom keeps it simple. But often it is easy to overlook the perspective we are to have if we really are to meaningfully love others, especially those who are in difficult situations or are hard to love. “Chains shall He (God) break, for the slave is our brother.” We are to consider ourselves as brothers or sisters to slaves? This is a very radical idea. But it is a message that was used very powerfully in the abolitionist movement during the 1800’s in England and America. The image below was used on literature and pottery, and most frequently on sugar bowls. It was like the t-shirt or bumper sticker of the movement. People who would buy such a bowl would be showing that they did not have sugar that was harvested by slave labor.

The image appealed to Christian’s understanding of not only the humanity of a slave, but to their very own identity as being brother to a slave. Christians know that every person is a slave to sin. We don’t naturally do the perfect will of God. Such a slave cannot just walk away and be free, he is enslaved to the power of sin over his life. The Gospel is the message that frees man from his sin by the work of Christ on the cross and not by man’s own effort. He or she should understand as much as anyone that they have been set free from the slave master of sin. And so we are family with all those who experience slavery and long to be freed.

When I think of why we are involved in Hope Jewelry, I am reminded not just that is good to help women get free from sexual slavery. More than that, it is that I too am a brother to her and she is my sister. My identity is the same as hers and we are to walk the same path as members of the same family. We both have been set free to be all that God wants us to be.

Some people think slavery will end by changing the economics of slavery so that it is no longer profitable to traffic people. Economics do matter but until hearts change, there will never be real transformation. That song and that image are from the 19th century. Their message was taken directly from the teachings and life of a man from the 1st century who came to set the captives free. And may in his name, all oppression cease.

People regularly ask us this and it’s a great question.  The merchandise we sell comes from organizations committed to helping women and children- those starting new lives, those currently being exploited, and those in danger of becoming victims of trafficking and slavery.  There are a variety of scenarios but typically the women are at an aftercare facility where they are healing from horrific experiences.  They learn a skill as part of their rehabilitation and also as a means to prepare them to live on their own.  Having a viable skill enables them to support  themselves so they won’t fall prey to traffickers again.  Not only is the sale of our items paying them for their time and materials in making it in the first place but it is also creating a demand for more merchandise  thus enabling the organizations to help more women.  On our website we list the organizations whose merchandise we sell.  We give a brief description of each and a link to the organization’s website.  Also, with every item purchased we give information about the organization who made the piece.  If you’d like to know who made a particular item please contact us and we’ll get you that information.

Nice Purse

rosa-purse

I carry this purse when I’m not using my purse/diaper bag which is functional but not pretty.  Not many people comment on my accessories but when someone does I say, “actually there’s a story behind it.”  Oftentimes there is no response.  They were just saying it to make conversation like “nice weather we’re having.” But, if given the chance, I tell them the story behind it.  Actually, the girl behind it.

This suede purse with embroidery was handmade by a girl at the Esther Benjamins Trust in Nepal.  She was rescued from the circus where she was enslaved in India.  Children from the rural parts of Nepal are targets for traffickers who use them to perform dangerous stunts without nets, stunt their growth so they can do more acrobatics, and force the girls to do “private shows”.  The children who are rescued go back to rescue others.  That must take a lot of courage to go back to the scene of such horrific abuse.

I think of them when I wear my purse.  It makes me very sad to think of how much they’ve suffered.  But the purse represents more than the injustice done to these precious people.  It represents a girl who has the freedom to use her talents and creativity.  Her dignity is being restored and she looks forward to a bright future.  In another words, she has HOPE.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine's cookies

These cookies were served at a Home Awareness Gathering last week.  About 20 people gathered together in a home in Mesa to learn more about sex trafficking in the world today.  We had a great question and answer time.  The statistics are greatly disturbing:  27 million slaves in the world today, 12 million enslaved in the sex industry.  A global problem that affects every country included the United States.  It’s not legal here nor anywhere else in the world but it exists everywhere.

We’re blessed to be selling handicrafts made by survivors working to live in freedom.  Guests were glad to come alongside these women by purchasing unique pieces of jewelry, hand bags & paper products. Many of them left with a deep sense of compassion and love for these hurting women and girls. On this day where we celebrate love let’s remember how much we are loved by God and are to love others, especially the loveless and the hopeless.  Let’s pray that one day soon they will know that they are loved and have hope.

Contact us if you want to learn more about attending or hosting an awareness event.

Ignorence is Bliss

Sex trafficking.  Just the word can make us uncomfortable.  It’s hard to hear about, read about, think about and, even more jarring, to see it on video.

It’s like witnessing a car accident.  We don’t want to look because it might be too awful to see or because we don’t want to be inconvenienced for some random stranger or we’re in a hurry or we’re going some place nice and don’t want to get our clothes dirty.  There are lots of reasons not to stop the car and get involved but some really compelling ones too.  First and formost we might be able to help.  We might be able to assist with physical or emotional needs.  We might be able to call for an ambulance.  Or maybe they won’t need us at all.  Regardless they’ll know that one person cared enough to be inconvenienced, one person wanted to be sure they were okay.  And we’ll know that we didn’t just sit back and let someone suffer.

If it is very hard for us to know about it.  Imagine how hard it is for the girl who is sexually assaulted 15 times a night.

Why a Blog?

We’re not bloggers.  Not for lack of interest but for lack of time.  Taking care of little children, not to mention husbands and homes, doesn’t leave much time to be on the internet.  But, Hope Jewelry and the cause of human trafficking is a huge motivator to engage in the blogging world. When you’re passionate about something you somehow make the time.  And we’ve become passionate because we’re overcome with a great sense of sympathy for women and girls enslaved in the sex industry.

We frequently do home awareness gatherings in which we give statistics and have a discussion about modern day slavery.  People are shocked to know the magnitude of this problem: an estimated 27 million slaves today.  We want to inform as many people as will listen/read so that they can be a part of the solution to this problem.  We’re always learning more about human trafficking and the sex trade in particular.  We want to share what we’ve been learning and we want to hear from others educating themselves on what is going on in the world.

We want to highlight Hope Jewelry merchandise and tell the story behind the piece.  Who made it?  What does it mean to her to create that piece of jewelry?  How does your purchase make an impact?  We also want to hear your stories about the earrings you gave as a gift or the stationery you used to write a friend and how the recipient responded when you told them where it came from.

Finally, we want this blog to be a venue where we can share resources- books, reviews, video recommendations, etc.  There is a long list of resources on our website but we have not read or seen many of them.  They are recommended by organizations we trust and feel confident that they are worth checking out, even though we can’t personally vouch for them.  Undoubtably there are a lot of great resources we don’t know about so we want you to give your recommendations.
