There are roughly 27 million slaves in the world – more than at any other time in human history.
Human trafficking is a global problem and affects every country, including the United States. The estimated number of trafficking victims in the United States is in the hundreds of thousands. 17,500 foreigners are trafficked into US annually.
This crime is the fastest growing international business, and generates roughly $19 billion annually.
People are enslaved in many different industries- including as domestic servants, in factory work, mining, rug making and agriculture. Children are exploited in these areas too and additionally as child soldiers, in the fishing industry, as circus performers and camel jockeys.
There are many different types of slavery but by far the area in which there are the most slaves is in the sex industry….There are approximately 12 million enslaved in the sex industry.
The definition of sex trafficking: …. “a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such an act has not attained 19 years of age.”
